Program Overview

The summer of 2019 will be the beginning of a new research opportunity for undergraduate students. The Diversity-Inclusion-Retention-Empowerment (DIRE) Project is designed to increase participation of underrepresented minority students in STEM  through an integrated research experience that combines fun activities, field work with research. This program is submitted for funding from  the National Science Foundation.

The program includes student forums, mentoring, internships, senior design project, alumni connect features. The goal of the DIRE project is to attract Under-Represented Minorities to research and guide them towards a CISE career path through a community-centric learning, research and development experience. The co-curriculum activities that can provide a well-rounded disciplinary experience while taking into account the social and relational aspects of learning are proven to be most effective for academic engagements and persistence in the sciences. This program is developed according to the recommendations and best practices outlined in National Science Board (NSB) and National Academy of Engineering (NAE) reports.
